ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CARIBUPDATE/Oct 20, 2016) - Grenada is hoping to attract some of the world’s top athletes for an IAAF-sanctioned international athletics meet next April 8, as preparations have begun for what organisers and government are bullish will be a top class trade-mark event.

The organisers won’t say who are the top athletes that they’d expect to take part in the meet, though there have been whispers about trying to get top US and Jamaican sprinters.

Grenada’s Kirani James is also expected to be one of the marquee names.

Bahamian international 400 meter champion Chris Brown, who has experience organising his own games in Nassau, is providing expert assistance for the Grenada event – the brainchild of journalist Michael Bascombe and promoter Dexter Mitchell.

Brown is this week in Grenada meeting with athletics and government officials.

He also met Monday with students of the St Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School, which over the years has churned out some of Grenada’s top athletes.

On Wednesday he also toured the facilities at Grenada’s impressive athletic stadium.

“We were making sure, everything is in the right proper channel and standard for international competition,” he said afterwards.

“We did a great review of the stadium and everything seemed to be OK in terms of Level One certification. I am looking forward to helping out and making sure everything runs smoothly,” Brown said.

Brown said he thinks Grenada will be up to putting together a world class games.

He said: “Definitely you will be very ready.  There is a great LOC (Local Organising Committee. Everyone seems to be on the same page. Everyone is on board. I am confident that Grenada will have a great showing, and this is something that the fans can definitely come out and support.”
